Rebalancing the economy: a 21st century industrial strategy

22 November, 2016 @ 8:45 am - 1:00 pm GMT

The British economy has long been afflicted by economic imbalances. The UK imports more than it exports, it relies too much on consumption as an engine of growth and has been unable to drive up its rate of productivity growth. Services and the south east dominate the economy, while manufacturing in the midlands and northern regions of the country have fallen behind.

The Prime Minister has made it clear that her government will pursue policies to make Britain a country that works not for a privileged few, but for everyone. That means improving productivity, increased investment in R&D and infrastructure including housing, and a plan for every great regional city. The Prime Minister has also set forth her ideas on how an industrial strategy should be capable of stepping into defend important sectors and to make votes on executive pay binding rather than just advisory. Markets need to be made to work better for people.

At this major conference the cross-party Centre for Progressive Capitalism think tank, in partnership with ICAEW, will bring together experts from both the private and public sector to debate what a 21st century industrial strategy can do to rebalance the British economy so it works for everyone.
